Imagine Music Lab — Starting the Week of January 5

I’m really excited to begin this next chapter with you.

Several years ago, when I was running my music school in Seattle, I made a similar shift — moving away from a strictly 1:1 lesson model and toward a more community-based way of learning music. At the time, it felt like a risk. What happened next completely changed how I teach.

Here’s what led me there:

  • Some of my strongest students earned full scholarships to Berklee College of Music, and when they returned, they shared that most of their learning happened in groups and ensembles, with only brief weekly private check-ins.

  • I ran an experiment with a few of my most challenging students and placed them in a group class together. Once we found our rhythm, they began to outpace students who were doing only traditional private lessons.

  • After years of touring and performing, I noticed something consistent among great musicians: many of them learned primarily by playing with other people, not just through lessons.

  • Mixing experience levels created something powerful — beginners were inspired by advanced players, and advanced players grew by learning how to listen, adapt, and communicate musically.

What happened when the community model took hold

  • Practice became more consistent — and felt less like a chore

  • Learning became more fun and engaging

  • Students experienced fewer plateaus and more creative momentum

  • Performance anxiety dropped as confidence grew through shared experience

I don’t expect this next iteration to unfold exactly the same way — there will always be surprises. But based on the work you’ve been doing and the growth I’ve seen, this feels like the right time to try something new together.

How the Imagine Music Lab Works

🎹 Music Maestros — Weekly Piano Classes (All Levels)

Three 60-minute classes each week

Each class blends multiple areas of musicianship, including:

  • Classical, pop, and rock piano

  • Technique and musicianship

  • Improvisation and ear training

  • Reading, harmony, and performance skills

Rather than separating styles, we’ll work on connecting them, so everything reinforces everything else.

🎷 Jazz Hands — Jazz Piano Class

One weekly 60-minute class (intermediate–advanced)

We’ll focus on:

  • Jazz standards and repertoire

  • Voicings, harmony, and chord progressions

  • Time feel, groove, and improvisation

  • Solo piano and ensemble concepts

  • Listening, transcription, and performance skills

🎧 Production Class (Invite Only)

A weekly class for students interested in creating music on their computer. This group is already at an advanced level, so participation is by invitation. If you’re curious, just let me know and we’ll talk.

🎵 Monthly In-Person Jam Session

Once a month, we’ll meet in my garage for a live jam session. We’ll:

  • Play with other musicians

  • Explore different musical roles (bass lines, grooves, accompaniment)

  • Learn how different genres function in real time

  • And most importantly — have fun making music together

đź’¬ Online Community + Class Recordings

  • All classes will be recorded and uploaded

  • A private online forum to ask questions, share recordings, sheet music, lead sheets, and ideas

  • Vote on repertoire, participate in challenges, and stay connected between sessions

🎯 Monthly 1:1 Coaching Session (Existing Students Only)

As a current student, you’ll receive one 60-minute private coaching session per month — similar to the lessons we’ve been doing, but now supported by the weekly classes and community. These sessions will be scheduled directly through the membership site.

Why this works

This model mirrors what helped me grow the most in college — even during busy weeks, I was constantly surrounded by music, ideas, and people playing. Over time, it sinks in. You become more fluent, confident, and well-rounded as a musician.

You don’t need to attend everything every week. But even dropping into an extra class during a low-practice week can be enough to reignite momentum.

Tuition & Enrollment

Starting in January, we’ll move to a simple monthly membership (similar to Netflix or Spotify). Billing is automatic and handled through the website.
