MULTIPLE WEEKLY PIANO CLASSES

The Three Pillars of Every Class...

1. Reimagining the Classics

Classical music becomes intuitive, expressive, and personal.

We explore classical repertoire not as something to “decode” note-by-note, but as a living musical language.

You’ll learn to recognize:

  • Patterns and shapes on the keyboard

  • Motivic cells and phrase structure

  • Harmonic logic and voice leading

  • How composers create momentum, tension, and release

This approach helps you:

  • Learn pieces faster

  • Memorize more naturally

  • Play with intention instead of fear

  • Build a meaningful, playable repertoire

Even if you’ve played classical music for years, you’ll begin to understand what you’re playing — not just execute it.

2. A Star Is Born

Practical tools for contemporary music that actually translate to real playing.

This pillar focuses on pop, rock, gospel, country, blues, and modern styles — without asking you to abandon your background or “pretend” to be someone you’re not.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Play by ear and from chord charts

  • Create convincing accompaniment textures

  • Build grooves and harmonic movement

  • Arrange songs in your own voice

  • Begin writing and shaping original music

Whether you want to:

  • Play songs with friends

  • Accompany yourself or others

  • Write your own music

  • Or simply enjoy sitting down and playing

These skills are designed to be immediately usable.

3. Music Muscles

The musicianship that makes everything else easier.

This is a creative, research-informed exploration of:

  • Ear training

  • Rhythm

  • Technique

  • Applied theory

  • Musical memory

The exercises in this section were developed and refined over years of teaching and testing in real classrooms — not academic labs.

They’re designed to:

  • Strengthen listening skills

  • Improve hand coordination

  • Increase confidence away from the page

  • Make theory feel useful instead of abstract

Most importantly, these activities are musical and engaging, not dry or intimidating.

Why This Integrated Approach Works

Music doesn’t exist in categories — and neither should learning it.

By combining these pillars in every class:

  • Classical players gain freedom and flexibility

  • Contemporary players gain depth and clarity

  • Everyone develops stronger intuition and confidence

You’re not “starting over” in each style — you’re building a single, adaptable musical identity that travels with you everywhere.

JAZZ HANDS

A Dedicated Jazz Piano Session

Jazz Hands is a focused, jazz-only class designed for players who want to go deeper into the language, feel, and tradition of jazz piano.

While the core weekly classes integrate multiple styles and skills, Jazz Hands zooms in on jazz as its own musical world — giving it the time, nuance, and respect it deserves.

What We Work On

This class explores jazz standards from the 1930s through modern repertoire, with an emphasis on function, not memorization.

Topics include:

  • Jazz harmony and functional progressions

  • Voicings and voice leading

  • Groove, time feel, and comping styles

  • Improvisation and melodic development

  • Understanding form and structure in standards

You’ll learn how tunes actually work, so you can sit down at a piano and make music — not just recall licks or shapes.

Building a Personal Jazz Repertoire

Rather than assigning a fixed list of tunes, you’ll be encouraged to:

  • Choose standards you genuinely connect with

  • Learn how to extract the harmonic and melodic DNA from each tune

  • Develop multiple ways to approach the same song

The goal is to build a living repertoire — music you can return to, adapt, and enjoy over time.

Who This Class Is For

Jazz Hands is ideal for:

  • Classical players curious about jazz but unsure where to start

  • Intermediate jazz players who feel stuck playing “patterns”

  • Musicians who want to understand harmony more deeply

  • Anyone who wants jazz to feel musical instead of academic

You don’t need to be an advanced improviser — curiosity, consistency, and listening are far more important.

How It Fits Into the Lab

Jazz Hands is a style-specific supplement to the core integrated classes.

Many members use it to:

  • Deepen harmonic understanding

  • Improve ear training and time feel

  • Strengthen improvisational confidence

It’s not required — but for students drawn to jazz, it often becomes a favorite.
